since everyone is pretty familiar with the Great American Songbook stuff, I'm not going to list any of those.. or any of the classic McCartney songs.. sigh... but here are the lyrics to two less well known songs that I really love. The lyrics to both are exquisite. Of course, the poetry of Dylan's lyrics is breathtaking, but I also love the vulnerability and gentleness of the Dylan lyric. The Manilow song has a lyric of fantasy romance and a soaring melody. Two great, great love songs.
Make You Feel My Love
music and lyrics by Bob Dylan
When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love
When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love
I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong
I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
There's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love
The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing like me yet
I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love
WHO NEEDS TO DREAM?
Music by Barry Manilow & Artie Butler
Lyrics by Bruce Sussman & Jack Feldman
You were in my dreams
Always in my dreams
That was long before
I ever saw you standing there
When I felt afraid
Of the choice I made
I would close my eyes
And hope my dreams would comfort me
But now I'm free
Who needs to dream when there is you?
Who needs a heaven to look forward to?
For my whole life through
Who needs to dream?
You're my dream come true
In my fantasy
You believed in me
And as long as you were there
Then I believed in me
Now suddenly
Who needs to dream when there is you?
Who needs a heaven to look forward to?
For my whole life through
Who needs to dream?
You're my dream come true
Now you are my dream
You are my only dream
I'll hold you in my heart forever
Who needs to dream?
Who needs to dream?
When I see you there
Then I see my every dream come true
Who needs to dream when there is you?
Who needs a heaven?
For my whole life through
Who needs to dream?
You're my dream come true
Every dream
All come true
My dream come true!

Ooh, good question. There are tons in the Great American Songbook, and those are really the best, but there's one that I've loved since I was a teenager that not many people know. It's not the best musically (quite boring, really), but the lyrics, while a little stream of consciousness, are just perfect to me. It's Depeche Mode's "Somebody". Here are the lyrics:
I want somebody to share
Share the rest of my life
Share my innermost thoughts
Know my intimate details
Someone who'll stand by my side
And give me support
And in return
She'll get my support
She will listen to me
When I want to speak
About the world we live in
And life in general
Though my views may be wrong
They may even be perverted
She'll hear me out
And won't easily be converted
To my way of thinking
In fact she'll often disagree
But at the end of it all
She will understand me
I want somebody who cares
For me passionately
With every thought and
With every breath
Someone who'll help me see things
In a different light
All the things I detest
I will almost like
I don't want to be tied
To anyone's strings
I'm carefully trying to steer clear of
Those things
But when I'm asleep
I want somebody
Who will put their arms around me
And kiss me tenderly
Though things like this
Make me sick
In a case like this
I'll get away with it.
I hadn't thought of this song in years, but this thread just reminded me of it.

That is a great song Shelley. Another one by Jim Croce "I'll have to say I love you in a song" is a great song. I also love "It's your love" by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.quote:Originally posted by shelzg:

"As far as it goes" by George Strait is an up beat song but the words are so great. I think it's a very good love song.
A sample:
"I'm only gonna give you everything
Take it a mile beyond the end of the road
I'm gonna love you one day past forever
But that's as far as it goes".
